I was looking through the different words from chapter 1-3 last week and I felt like I knew most of them but I have not heard from them for awhile. But I had choose a few I have not heard and I wanted to learn more. So there was none out of chapter 2 I choose. Chapter one I had one I wanted to learn more about the first is "look-say" method. This is used when students learn sight words. I actually use this method in my kindergarten classroom right now it is just not called anything. So it was interesting to hear it be called something. So this would be when students memorize words and then they can go back and recall the words. I would use this during my daily teaching of sight words, I think it would be the best way to teach these words.
Then to chapter three I had two, the first one out of chapter three is morning message. This means doing a daily sharing for your students from either a note on the board or a letter you read to them. This gives them information about the day and to know what is coming up. I would use this everyday in my classroom, I think it is such a wonderful idea and would be a great learning tool also for the students. The last one I selected is four blocks. This is another reading program, it is somewhat related to Daily 5. It has four items that go along with the reading; Guided reading, self-selected reading, writer's workshop, working with words. These are just four different ideas for students to learn to read and read better and understand it better. I would use this and I think this would work good in a classroom when you have some time to work on just reading. Some classes you do not have time for just reading but if you did I think this would be great. Overall, I love learning new words and these are just a few that stood out to me that I really wanted to learn more about.
My questions would be did you guys like the Four Block idea or the Daily 5 better? and Did you guys like the morning message? Why?
I have never heard of sight words called "look say" either, but have seen them used in almost every classroom I've been in! I have seen "morning messages" used a lot in lower grades like Pre-K, K, and 1st. I don't think the older grades use it much, which is sad.... I think all ages of kids could benefit form a morning message:)
ReplyDeleteI agree I think morning message should be used in all grades really. I think it gives the students a heads up for the day and just a positive start to their day!
DeleteI think a morning message is a great way to start the day! Gives students something to look forward to when coming to class. I like both the daily five and the four blocks. I think both can be used. I think students should have a choice in what they read to an extent so that they will want to read. For instance some students may only want to read one type of book and if you don't sometimes choose for them then they will always only know that type of book but at the same time if you pick for them and they don't like it then it may discourage them from trying something new on their own.
ReplyDeleteI love morning messages as well! I agree with you about daily 5 and four blocks I like this both. I have never used four blocks but have have daily 5 so I say I like that better for now until I try the other 😂 I agree about letting students pick what they want to read when they get into the upper grades after they have learned how to read well!
DeleteWe chose similar words! I absolutely LOVE the idea of doing a morning message. It just seems like a great routine to use in the classroom and to keep students informed. I think I like the Four Blocks program better simply because I really like the idea of Writer's Workshop. I think it could be applied to many different texts and writing assignments.
ReplyDeleteI agree doing a morning message every morning is wonderful to do with your students. I think it will bring the classroom together.
DeleteLeslie, I too was familiar with almost all the terms. It was kind of a review from all my education classes. And from your question, I think I would do the daily 5 because I am more familiar with it and have seen how students enjoy it for the most part.
ReplyDeleteI agree I am much more familiar with daily 5 so I would feel comfortable working with this!
DeleteI would say I like the Daily 5 and morning message the best because I am familiar with the Daily 5 and you can get really creative with the morning message.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I love how the morning message can me changed everyday!!
DeleteI love that you love morning messages! It was honestly my favorite time of the day! When I was a principal I had a morning message outside my office that the kids would read every day. The littles would ask the older ones to read it to them and that just made my day!!
