week 5: lesson planning!

Lesson Lesson Lesson!! Lots of lesson! I have not wrote out a completed lesson plan yet but I plan to work all day tomorrow on them I have the day off to just do lesson plans!!! I have all the ideas I want in my plans already done though! I am doing my unit for first grade, over phonics! I have a few hands on activities to teach my lessons. I think the few I am doing the students will enjoy! On my last day we will be doing a review for the test, I am going to have the student play jeopardy in groups.! In my 100 class we did this for studying and I truly enjoyed it and I think the students will love to play the game and to have a little competition. I honestly did not use any sites to help me with this unit besides the Missouri Learn Standards of course. I used a lot of my experience in the classroom already to help me make my lesson. I have been in the classroom a lot. So I have seen what the students learn well with and what they do not. Also I have seen how teachers teach and what they use to help them teach. So I used all of this to help me with this unit! I loved doing it. I like making the different test it make me think deeper and I enjoy that. Overall, I am excited to share two my lessons next week with the class! I cant believe we only have 3 more classes left now!!!

WHAT IS YOUR GUYS LESSONS OVER? WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFCULT PART OF YOUR LESSONS? WHAT IS THE MOST SIMPLE PART OF YOUR LESSONS?

P.S. I am student teaching at Camdenton this August and their new teaching ways are, looking at the Missouri Learning Standards and making lessons to fit them! So I feel this unit will help me a lot! I plan to use these lessons if I am giving the opportunity during my student teaching so I am excited!

Week 4. Chapters 4-5 take away

Tonight class was a lot different due to Dr. Steffes being out of the country! (so jealous!!;) I listened to the recording and took some notes and now I am typing my take aways! I actually enjoyed class like this, it was nice to be able to listen and take notes on our own time; as fast or as slow as we wanted to. Then to be able to get out early was very nice!!
First was chapter 9! I found it so interesting that there are so many different borrowed words in the English language from other languages. I had no idea so many common words were from other languages. This was very interesting to figure out and to know. I also did not realize there were 26 dialects in the U.S.! These are just a few things that I am glad I know now haha!
I think it is so interesting to know that babbling as a tiny baby is actually the baby trying to make words from some simple sounds that they know! It is crazy how so young children already start to know sounds and express them in this babbling way.
I liked learning also that there is 42 phonemes, which are the sounds we teach in the younger grades. I knew there was a lot but I never knew truly how many here was. Lastly, in this chapter I found it interesting that there was 9 English consonants that are not in Spanish language. I think that is pretty cool to know that English has that many different consonants not in Spanish.
WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST INTRESTING ABOUT THIS CHAPTER?

Now to chapter 10! First off I loved the background on the powerpoint!! Super cute! I would so use that in a powerpoint for a lesson!!! This chapter was about oral language. At the beginning it talked about teaching conversation skills. You think that conversation skills are suppose to be something that you just know and not be something that is suppose to be taught but really when students are so young they are taught conversation skills so they can know how to discuss information as they get older. I loved the puppetry idea to teach oral language. I think students would truly love this! I think they would have a blast!! I have used the class class, yes yes. Many times as classroom management but I didn't even think of it being an oral speaking skill too. That was very interesting.
WOULD YOU USE PUPPETRY IN YOUR CLASSROOM?

Now the last chapter 11! I like how she started off with the poem. I think doing that with students and telling to try to remember as much as they can. Even to put students into groups afterwards and have them put their answers together and then maybe the group that gets the most gets a high five or a piece of candy. I find it interesting that if you say see how much you can remember student listen so much more than if you just say okay now I will read a story. Changing your voice is important too and I think students realize it after they have had you for a little bit that when you change your voice that it is important.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS MOST IMPORTANT ABOUT LISTENING?
Overall, these chapters were very interesting and I took away a lot of information!

WORD WALLS

This week in our blogs we are to discuss word walls! I am excited to see the pictures everyone has came up with. I think a word wall is a must in a classroom. I think having one for math and reading/writing is a great idea as well. I 100% will have them in my classroom someday soon :)

So this picture to the right is from my kindergarten classroom
I worked in this past school year! As you can see some of the
words are falling off. We put it up and never really messed with
it anymore sadly. It consist of all of the sight words we learned
this year during kindergarten. I think it worked great the students
Used it a lot as a reference when writing in their journals.

This word wall to the left is one I found on Pinterest. That is where I find a lot of my ideas for a classroom haha! I love this one because it is for math! I think most people assume a word wall is used just for reading/ writing and that is not the case at all! Its important to use it in all subjects.
This word wall to the right I found on Pinterest as well. I just thought it was cute and was creative. I like that it is some what is low to the ground so students can add and take away words through out the year. I like how the squares are big so a lot of words can fit in it.

This is a picture I found on Pinterest as well. I love it! It is a personal word wall for the students to have with them at all times. I like this because it can be a wonderful resource. Also not all students need help with the same words so this makes it more personal where they can put words they need help with.

Overall, I love word walls and can't wait to see what everyone else post!
Which word wall out of my pictures do you like the most? Why?

Blog 2: reflection

I was looking through the different words from chapter 1-3 last week and I felt like I knew most of them but I have not heard from them for awhile. But I had choose a few I have not heard and I wanted to learn more. So there was none out of chapter 2 I choose. Chapter one I had one I wanted to learn more about the first is "look-say" method. This is used when students learn sight words. I actually use this method in my kindergarten classroom right now it is just not called anything. So it was interesting to hear it be called something. So this would be when students memorize words and then they can go back and recall the words. I would use this during my daily teaching of sight words, I think it would be the best way to teach these words.
Then to chapter three I had two, the first one out of chapter three is morning message. This means doing a daily sharing for your students from either a note on the board or a letter you read to them. This gives them information about the day and to know what is coming up. I would use this everyday in my classroom, I think it is such a wonderful idea and would be a great learning tool also for the students. The last one I selected is four blocks. This is another reading program, it is somewhat related to Daily 5.  It has four items that go along with the reading; Guided reading, self-selected reading, writer's workshop, working with words. These are just four different ideas for students to learn to read and read better and understand it better. I would use this and I think this would work good in a classroom when you have some time to work on just reading. Some classes you do not have time for just reading but if you did I think this would be great. Overall, I love learning new words and these are just a few that stood out to me that I really wanted to learn more about.
My questions would be did you guys like the Four Block idea or the Daily 5 better? and Did you guys like the morning message? Why?

week one reflection

Tonight we touched based on a lot of the assignments that will be due the next 8 weeks and information about the blogs. When then went in to two different websites and found the information that we liked from them and shared them in a discussion.

I am excited to be in groups with the blogs so we can focus on a handful of peoples post and talk to them a lot more than if we had to do the whole class. I also like how we have different parts of the unit plan due at different times so that way we don't wait till the last minute to do it all and are overwhelmed. It gives us a little stepping stone on the big unit. I do think though we need an idea of our lesson plans or have them wrote up or at least a rough draft of them to be able to make our 100 questions since they are to be based off the lesson plans for the 10 days.

I loved looking at the websites, I saved them into my phone as well so I could use them as a reference. There are so many different lesson ideas that can be used and there is some for every grade level and different subject ideas.

Overall, tonight was a great class and the time we spend working during class was really great because I have so much other homework from my other class and trying to start MOPTA, so thank you so much Mrs. Steffes.

Questions: Do you guys think the scope and sequence will help us with the unit plan? I think the 100 questions will be easier since we did questions on DOK last session, do you ? What questions do you have for me?:)
